#169 XS650Custom Report

This is a custom XS650 that we received as a bring-in order from Toyama Prefecture, following an accident that completely wrecked the front end.

We built it in a vintage style that’s a mixture of 60s chopper/bobber/old racer, after having many discussions with the owner.

The owner, who had admired the XS650 in ” Custom Gallery No.131 “, requested 2%ER, and the silhouette is the same as the 74 Springer, with a 7.5cm extended swing arm, front 19/rear 18 inches, and 280mm rear shock. However, we finished it as a unique custom to the owner’s liking by selecting the exterior.

Since the customer is from a distant place, we made sure to use only parts that are easy to obtain and repair, without using any unreliable vintage parts. We made it with the intention of allowing the customer to enjoy it for a long time with peace of mind, even in the unlikely event of a part failure.

The overall worn and well-used look is due to the aging process by ” BACON “. Not only the gas tank and rear fender, but also the entire vehicle was aged.

Custom List

FrontHandlebars, F forks, headlights, etc.

Front Fork

“74 Springer Fork/2 Inch Over”

◯The brake panel is set to sink smoothly during braking due to the floating processing and improved torque rod mounting angle.

“Drum Brake Panel for 74 Springer”

〇A brake panel with floating processing necessary to sink the front fork during braking.

Front Wheel

Front 19 Inch Kit SR400/500 for Drum

◯Adapted from SR400. Converted to 19 inches, the tire is a Pirelli MT53 replica. I deliberately used a black rim of a different color from the rear. I aimed for the atmosphere of a junk bike assembled from various parts.

Headlight

5.75 inch Old Bates Type Side Mount Headlight #5.75 inch headlight #General-purpose parts

◯The body was painted black and mounted with a one-off side light stay.

Handle/Handle Area

Old Racer Bar Handle 7/8” (22.2mm)

Amal type throttle holder, general purpose (for 7/8″)

Chrome British Car Type Clutch Lever

Chrome British Car Type Brake Lever

◯The controls are neatly finished with mini switches and the like.

Handle Lock Weld On Kit

〇This is a kit for installing a handle lock in a discreet and convenient location.

Speedometer

Mechanical Speedometer 60mm Black Panel 1:4

Universal Speedometer Stay

〇Mounted on the left front side of the gasoline tank, where it is inconspicuous and highly visible.

CenterTank, oil tank, seat, step, muffler etc.

Muffler

◯We have created a racy 2-in-1 exhaust pipe that gathers at the front of the engine. The upswept muffler is a replica muffler of the Indian Chief. We set it at a wicked angle, adding some improvisation to the mounting angle.

Step

◯The step is a one-off production mid-high step. It is made in the best position for the owner to not get tired.

Seat

Narrow Type Bates Replica Solo Seat/Pillion Pad Set in Black

〇A narrow solo/pillion pad with a flat base. The narrow solo seat is mounted on the dropped seat subframe with springs.

Welding nut non-through M8 2p

〇Used on the frame side as a seat spring receiver.

Gasoline Tank

◯The small gasoline tank is a one-off production with a 3-point rubber mount. To avoid reducing the capacity any further, we avoided real partitioning and added a center plate, and created a partition-like style by attaching ” Circle Gas Cap ” on both sides.

Electrical Equipment

◯The box under the seat is an electrical equipment box, which was created by narrowing the vertical width of the oil tank of the Harley 4-speed frame and installing it. It is designed so that you can access all the electrical equipment with just one tool. The battery is mounted from the frame to the lower part of the engine rear and the swing arm.

  • RearFenders, rear shocks, swingarms, etc.

    Rear Wheel

◯The rear wheel uses an H-type aluminum rim, giving it a light and nimble image with an 18-inch size.

    Rear Tire

    “Roadster 4.50-18 Tire”

〇Vintage style, watermelon pattern classic tire.

    Rear Shock

    “280mm G-Suspension/Chrome”

〇By extending the swingarm by 7.5cm and relocating the rear shock mount of the swingarm forward, the lever ratio is increased, making the rear shock more responsive and improving the ride comfort.

    Sissy Bar/Tail Lamp

◯An authentic spade design sissy bar was also made to order. The tail lamp selected was a replica tail from Wipac.

    Rear Fender

◯The classical rear fender is ” Universal Center Rib Fender Handmade “. It is used with reinforcements that can withstand the slight vibrations of XS and the weight and sagging of the sissy bar on the back. The finish that looks well-used is a new aging paint by BACON. A checker pattern that doesn’t assert too much is painted on the front side.

    RearTurn Signal

Small Rubber Winker Smoke Set of 4

◯The turn signal, which looks as if it’s not attached, is mounted on the rear of the exhaust pipe.
